Child Passenger Safety Program
The leading cause of severe injuries and death for children from birth to 12 years of age is automobile crashes. Most of the injuries and deaths are preventable by proper use of an appropriate child restraint system for the age and weight of the child.
Car seat safety classes are offered to educate parents and caregivers on the state law and the correct use of child safety seats. Classes and the Car Seat Fitting Inspection Station are conducted by a nationally Certified Passenger Safety Technician and are free to all residents of San Joaquin County. After completion of a class, the participants have the option of purchasing a child safety seat at a reduced cost.
To register for a class or for more information, call (209) 468-8914.
The English speaking Classes are held every Wednesday at 11:00 am or 1:30 pm at 420 South Wilson Way, Stockton, CA 95205.
The Spanish speaking Class is conducted on the 2nd Thursday of each month at 2:30 pm at 1601 E. Hazelton Ave. Stockton, CA 95205.

Diabetes Prevention: Healthy Women/Healthy Bodies Program
The Healthy Women/Healthy Bodies Program is designed for women ages 18 to 49 with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or more. The program consists of a series of three free classes. Sessions are fun, interactive and supportive. By attending all three classes you will learn how small steps, taken every day, will make a big difference in your health. Studies show that people with higher risk of diabetes can prevent or delay the disease by losing just 5 to 7 percent of their weight.
Classes are offered throughout San Joaquin County at no charge. This project is provided through a Kaiser Permanente Community Benefit Programs Grant. For more information, call (209) 468-2406.
Nutrition and Physical Activity (The Network for a Healthy California)
This program, funded by the Network for a Healthy California, creates partnerships that empower low-income San Joaquin county residents to increase fruit and vegetable consumption, physical activity and food security with the goal of preventing obesity and other diet-related chronic diseases. Education and outreach is used to assist behavior change in homes, schools, worksites, and communities to create environments that support fruit and vegetable consumption and are conducive to an active, healthy lifestyle. For more information or to schedule a presentation, call (209) 468-3368.
This section is responsible for developing and coordinating communication and outreach strategies from Public Health Services to the community on issues that impact the public’s health. These activities increase the community’s ability to prepare for and respond to public health concerns and risks, including emergencies. Information is disseminated to the community through health advisories, health alerts, news releases, bulletins, updates, media activities such as interviews and press conferences, website postings, recorded message lines, community and leadership forums/trainings, educational materials, community health fairs, and presentations at community centers and community events. Obesity Prevention Program
SJC obesity prevention is aimed at engaging public and private partners in promoting healthy behaviors like physical activity and good nutrition by developing supportive environments in the county. Being overweight increases a person’s risk of heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, certain cancers and other serious medical conditions that can impact quality of life. Through our Peer-to-Peer Network (Moms conversing with other Moms), the Diabetes Prevention Program, and participation on The Obesity and Chronic Disease Prevention Taskforce we are striving to make San Joaquin County a healthier place to live. For more information, call (209) 468-3868.
