New School Entry/Immunization Law: Tdap Vaccine Before 7th Grade

Pertussis (whooping cough) is a serious and highly contagious disease that every year causes illness and death in the United States. Because immunity from prior pertussis vaccination or natural disease fades over time, California law now requires "Tdap" booster shots for all students before entering 7th grade. If a child has received one dose of Tdap vaccine on or after their 7th birthday, the requirement is met. Getting a "Tdap" shot NOW protects your child against the ongoing threat of pertussis and meets the NEW School Immunization Law. Contact your child's healthcare provider as soon as possible to make sure your child is up-to-date on immunizations.  It is also important to give the immunization record or other proof of Tdap vaccination to your child's school as soon as possible.  Seventh grade students without proof of a Tdap vaccination will not be allowed to register for classes or attend school.  Tdap vaccine is also available at many local pharmacies and health clinics.  For the Public Health Services Immunization Clinic Schedules, click here.

It is also recommended that Parents (Spanish), grandparents (Spanish), health care workers and anyone who works with pregnant (Spanish) or post-partum women, or cares for, infants or young children should be immunized.

Vaccine Information for Parents
Most parents today have never seen first-hand the devastating consequences that vaccine-preventable diseases can have on a child, a family, or community. Thanks to vaccines, many of these diseases are not common in the U.S., but they persist around the world.  Immunizations are still the best way to protect children from 14 vaccine-preventable diseases.
CDC recently launched a new website designed with input from parents of babies and toddlers. This site features easy-to-find vaccine information, including:Personal stories of vaccine preventable diseases can be found on the website: http://shotbyshot.org/

New Child Passenger Safety Law in California
Effective January 1, 2012, California law requires:
  • Children must be properly secured in an appropriate child passenger restraint (safety seat or booster seat) in the back seat of the vehicle until they are at least 8 years of age or 4' 9" tall.
  • Everyone in the car must be properly buckled up. For each child under 16 who is not properly secured, parents (if in the car) or drivers can be fined more than $475 and get a point on their driving record.
The San Joaquin County Public Health Services Child Passenger Safety Program educates parents and caregivers about the law as well as proper installation and use of child safety seats and booster seats through its Car Seat Safety Classes and its Car Seat Fitting Station.  Completion of a class or presentation from Public Health Services is required to purchase a reduced-cost car seat. There is no charge for the class or car seat inspection.
